12 Killed in Cult Clashes

Bloody clashes between rival cult groups have left 12 dead at the Kwara State Polytechnic, in Nigeria's central state of Kwara. Two rival cult gangs at the campus, in the state capital Ilorin, attacked each other in a battle for control of the institution over the last three weeks. Police have occupied the campus at the request of the principal, Omobolanle Olatunji.

Since the advent of the nation's economic crisis in the early 1980s, and the political crisis of recent years, cult practice, which was once common in universities and colleges, as well as middle schools across Nigeria, has been reviving. [The sources are not clear what constitutes cult practices.] (Xinhua via COMTEX, 12/10/01, Internet)
